I didn't say gasoline was 35% toluene, but rather that it had a substantial amount of toluene, so that your car wouldn't notice another gallon out of 18. That being said, note the following short organic chemistry lesson:
Benzene is a plain benzene ring, C6H6.
Toluene is a benzene ring with a methyl group (one carbon) hanging on the side.
All the xylenes (m-, p-, and o) are a benzene ring with 2 methyl groups hanging on two corners.
Ethyl benzene is a benzene ring with an ethyl group (2 carbon chain)hanging on the the side.
In chemical processes, these act differently, and are used to make different products. Inside an internal combustion engine, they all act substantially the same.
I say this with confidence, because I used to be in the business of designing refinery control systems, including gasoline blending control systems.
