On my 1999 9-3 HOT
I have had Jet Hot coat, among other things, the exhaust manifold and entire 3" turbo back exhaust. The manifold was coated only on the outside with Black 2000. The downpipe is coated with sterling (shinny stuff). The downpipe coating has already begun to fade. (~3 months) If you chose to go that route have them use the high temp coating on the downpipe and the shinny stuff the rest of the way. DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT coat only part of the exhaust. You will create a huge heat sink. As stated by Dean, the way Ceramic-coating works is by keeping the heat out of the metal and flowing through the pipes at a faster rate. By not allowing the metal to absorb heat, it won’t transfer that heat back to the coming airflow. Knowing that, you will have a huge heat build up at the cat or beginning of the cat back, right where the coating stops. The metal at that point will absorb more heat than if you didn't coat anything.
This information comes from a chief NASA engineer, the proprietors of ceramics. I also have three friends whom support these claims. All of them work for Coors Ceramics, world leaders in ceramic materials. Dean, I look forward to your thoughts.
This heat sink will cause a large pressure difference right where you don't want it to be, in the middle of the exhaust.
As Dean stated, you probably will not notice a performance gain. What will be noticed it the car will perform equally well in hot or cold temps. Mostly a cosmetic mod for your purposes.
With that said you are probably asking why do a cosmetic mod to the bottom of the engine bay? I am extremely concerned about heat. I live at high elevation and it gets consistently hot here in the summer (100+ F). Additionally I am hoping for around 275-290 HP at the wheels. Thats 320-350 crank HP. My thoughts are anything I can do to reduce heat will increase performance. Besides, the coating is relatively cheap at ~ $12/Ft. Shipping tends to be more expensive than the coating. That’s my two cents.
