I have to agree that the 9-3, Viggen or not has crap suspension from the factory. With the addition of aftermarket springs, shocks and a roll-bar change, it becomes the car it should have been from the factory. It becomes a great everyday car that is merely adequate to survive on the track once in a while.

I cannot comment on a 9-3 vs C900 and such but I have to really agree with the idea that a better balanced car in the end is better than having super high hp numbers. I really enjoy taking my 9-3 to the Nurburgring on a somewhat regular basis and compared to the chassis mods mine has, I see no reason to go for any more than the 260 hp and 350 Nm that my car has. Both on the road and on the Ring, my car now feels to have a proper balance between the power, braking and handling abilities. If I get much more power, I will spend more time on the brakes than anything else. Also, my 9-3 has enough juice that in most 3rd gear corners on the ring, it will spin the tires and has on occasion, spun them in a few 4th gear corners. This is a real testament to the fact that only so much power can really be used effectively on the track in this car. My car will remain a great daily driver and autobahn cruiser, but when the day comes that I can afford a true sporty car, the Saab will probabaly never see the track again.

My car:
1999 9-3 US spec 5 door, 185 hp model

Mods:

larger intake pipe on stock airbox
Viggen spec I/C
ported TBTC
BSR 3" dp and race cat
Saab USA stainless sport cat-back exhaust
custom programmed ECU by Hirsch Performance

260 hp and 350 Nm

H&R springs
Koni adjustable shocks
SAS rear anti-roll bar
stock rotors slotted by KVR Performance
Hawk HPS pads
