The MBCs do not cause knocking in an T5 engine in good repair. I assume that what you saw to the contrary was in reference to a C900. The T5 will manage knock by miture and timing. Reducing the boost is a fail safe that is rarely needed in a T5. Note that a modified ECU at pressures above what you can achieve with a MBC on a T5 does not achieve those power levels by lowering the boost!
A MBC on a T5 is working withing the fuel mappings of the ECU, just not within the boost pressure limits. And if the MAP sensor is hacked, it will go to higher pressures and map fuel well. But higher fuel pressures are rtequired at some point. It is a very adaptable ECU.
You can also get very good gains with other restriction reducing mods which will yield denser charge air at the same pressures.
