The 1991 and 1992 9000s have what we consider to be a "cult" following in the US due to the car's reliability and the torque per $ that may be created/added over OEM.
The turbocharger boost control is monitored/controlled by the DI/APC control unit and will maximize boost pressures at what this control unit dictates. Some owners increase base boost levels which will bring about a higher than OEM initial boost pressure but a taper back to the APC controlled maximum boost target. For an increase in APC controlled maximum boost levels, an EPROM update is required and, in some cases, this may nearly double OEM boost pressures and maintain a consistant turbo boost progression towards a 20-22 psi threshold.
A manual boost controller may have also been employed which will negate the APC system but,if adjusted progressively, will increase maximum boost targets.
Factor about a 5 BHP gain per PSI increment over OEM (IE 5 psi over OEM boost levels may allow for a 25 BHP increase). Engine torque is also greatly enhanced with the forced induction and this may not be something regularly seen with the BMW naturally asp. engines.
