Hi Jeff,
I owned a set of Kumho 712 Ecstas prior to buying the Yokohamas. I also own a set of Falken Azenis. The 712s saw considerable autocross time as well as regular daily-driven road miles. The difference in sidewall stiffness is obvious -- as Damien notes above, it's like the steering response has a little "lag." For people who formerly rode on tires with a stiffer sidewall, this is unacceptable. This is not a problem for me personally.
In my experience, the Kumho 712 is a small step backward in grip vs. the Yoks. However, the new-ish Kumho MX is apparently about as good as the amazing but short-lived Falken Azenis.
IMHO, if maximum dry performance is what you seek, you can do no better than the Azenis. These tires are dirt cheap, have unbelievably stiff sidewalls grip as well as *any* tire for any amount of money (see grassroots motorsports' tire issue last year -- the BFG KDs, at well over double the cost of the Falkens, were only insignificantly faster). If your size isn't available, consider the Kumho MX for a bit more money.
Another new player in max performance is Hankook -- may be worth looking into. Word is that they're designing tires to compete directly with the Azenis. Even if they miss the mark slightly, should be a decent tire for low bucks.
