First of all, glad you're up to something again. Seems like the t-7 aero has has you a bit stumped for a while as to how to tinker. Glad you're up to something again...Here's my thoughts...
I have always wondered why they ground the electrode on the platimun plugs but not the regular ones. I thought it had to do with thet fact that copper would disinigrate quicker than platinums.
Humor me for a minute:
Early on in my postings on TSN, I had rasied the question about plugs other than NGK's/ I have stuck with them primarily due to saab and TSN recommendations. Previous experience though, in my '89 spg(obviously non-DI) i tried many different plugs. The Bosch +4's were great at first but tended to foul quickly due to their encase electrode. They were great until they fouled. But my favorite plug of all, which I could always feel better responsiveness out of, were, (don't chastise me yet) Splitfires. I bought the car with them in, ran them for about 10k miles and changed to NGK. Immediately felt a performance drop. Ran the ngk's for about 5k, and changed back to splitfires, immediately felt a performance increase. Chnaged to Bosch+4's, felt as steady as the splitfires, but fouled after 3k miles. returned to ngk's and felt a decrease in responsiveness.
So my point? What is it about the splitfires, or the v grooved ngk's or your DIY grind NGK's can we take from this and find something that really does perform? I've been half tempted to do similar things as you have done, filing in a v-groove, taking a dremel and cutting the ground up the middle and bending it out a bit, etc...
Granted many people have reported the inconsistency of splitfires and their bad reputation for fouling. While I am not considering trying them, I have not forgotton how they made the car perform. What is safe to try other than grinding down the electrode to a finer point? I am interested to see how the resistor holds up over time. Wonder if it will round and disinergrate quicker than normal. Lots of questions I realize.
