With regular gas, the engine is knocking when you floor the throttle at 1500 rpm. When the engine knocks, the electronics retard the timing and may cut back on the fuel. When you retard the timing and cut back on the fuel, you get better fuel mileage. While there may be a difference in the btu's per gallon between regular and premium, I doubt it can be measured.
