I joined this thread a bit late, but WOW are you lucky!!! My first car was a '72 Pinto wagon :-(. Actually it had the 2.0 engine still used for F2000 today, with a nice close-ratio 4spd, but everything else was junk.
Fast forward 15 years or so.... I'd second the opinion to upgrade tires, brakes & suspension first. What you don't want is to make it into an American car with buttloads of power and nothing else. Plus, improving your driving will make you way faster and prevent your insurance from going even higher.
I have a '95 Aero, and so far I've rebuilt the brakes and added stainless lines, a set of 225-50 Kumho MX, and put in a JT 3" downpipe/exhaust. I have a set of Konis and B&G springs sitting on my workbench, and am trying to figure out how to sneak a set of SAS swaybars into the house.
Try that for starters; the 3" downpipe is a must-have if you want to add power later, plus it gets rid of some of the turbo lag. It's not obnoxiously loud, either, which also helps with the insurance issue.
ALso- go try autocrossing to learn how to drive. I can't remember the NER-SCCA website since I'm at a hotel at the moment, but if you PM me I'll find it when I get home. They have events at Ft Devens, NHIS & a few other sites, and have an excellent novice program to get you going. If you go, my dad can help you get started- he uses a 9000 as a tow car for his F500 car, so he's easy to find. There's also a Saab tech who is a former national champion. You'll probably need to bring dad with you since you're 17, but if he got you an Aero, he'll probably want to play too.
