(This is all just my very humble opinion),
Of my best friends, 7 out of 8 of them are all in law enforcement. I get to do "ride alongs" whenever I get bored or just want to hang out. I have actually worked the radar gun while my pal talked to his girlfriend on his cell phone!(*no one gets a ticket when I go out, way too hypocritical.LOL!)
Bottom line is this, If you are the first car out in a pack or your out there all alone and you aren't paying attention, it won't matter what you have cause the instant-on Stalker is too friggin' fast to pick up, period. If you have a radar detector, it helps keep you on your toes, and if you are smart and move within some kind of cover(behind or within a large group), the detector will give you ample warning. Just remember to watch out behind large curves, coming down large blind hills, and the old classics like U-turns in the highway or underneath overpasses.
Having said all of that, there is more than enough concrete evidence to prove that the Valentine 1 is the best radar detector of all time. Once you get used to the locating arrows, you won't know how you lived without them. It cost is on par with a Faberge egg, but it's built well and it works the best. I think Bel has a very good reputation and would be my second choice, but the newest top Bel is almost the same price as the V1. Radar jammers and laser jammers have proven to be pure snake oil. There are a few real ones out there, but only for a few thousand dollars and even then they are too big for most car interiors! An interesting note about the K-40, not only doesn't it perform well in any of the shootouts, but the local retailer/installer here has told me that the only reason they still sell them is because of the huge mark-up that the local car dealerships can profit from. They have a package that they offer the dealerships, and when the install is done, it has a neat appearance built into the speedo cluster. The down side is that it doesn't work worth a crap. I'd stay away. Check out Car and Driver's annual shootout, and speedzones.com, they really put the products to the test. Speedzones also buys the units annonymously, due to some crooked companies souping up the test mules in the past. :o)
