Aluminum is tough to find but not impossible. If you're running a BOV as opposed to a BPV it will be easier as you won't have to deal with the BPV return. Mandrel bent steel would probably work just fine, but might want to wrap it. If you attempt to use a larger pipe, there are clearance issues getting it to attach to the turbo inlet pipe as there is not much extra room for it there. The turbo inlet pipe is 2" ID and most cone filters are 2 1/2 to 3" ID so there will be some need for reduction. Going 2" to 2" would probably defeat the purpose of replacing that pipe. As Dean said, it will need to have some ability to flex, but I think the silicon ends should be enough to allow movement. The one person I know who has done this have upgraded his turbo using the Mitsu TD-04 which has a different setup off the inlet and he was able to use a silicon 90 degree bend right of the turbo, so that allows for more flex and not as much of a issue as your setup.
I believe this project can be done, but it should address the other issues as well. Losing the true cold air intake doesn't solve the problem and no one to this point has effectively built a cold air intake for the car that has dealt with all of the issues. Space is an issue and nasty bends in the intake piping aren't good either. Cone filters have their benefits, but it comes with their drawbacks as well. Sticking the cone too far up into the engine bay sucks more heat, sticking donw in the wheelwell sucks more dirt and potentially water. I tried a heat shielded cone filter setup, but the heat shield was too large for the area to make it fit as I tried to get it positioned down toward the headlight to keep the cold air intake. Just didn't work and looked awful.
For the ends, you'll need some silicon connectors and they are not cheap. If you are not trying to increase the size of the piping,
If you are replacing the stock airbox, I suppose you will be attaching a cone filter off the end?
