Rationale not applicable to DI equipped saabs Posted by SLAAB [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Why a properly setup MBC is better than APC, Henry, Sat, 31 Jul 2004 19:01:24 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
T5 and later Trionic systems do NOT utilize a separate sonic knock sensor as indicated by Henry.
The Saab Trionic system analyzes the combustion process by using the spark plugs for measuring ionization within the cylinders. A weak voltage is applied across the gap of every spark plug after each combustion stroke. The current flowing back to the control unit is dependent on the number of ions that have been formed, which provides a measure of the combustion in each cylinder. Ionization measurement reveals whether the fuel/air mixture has ignited and burned correctly. Knock or detonation results in anomalous ionization readings. This method is extremely sensitive to the characteristics of the installed spark plug and has nothing to do with the way your car sounds. For this reason, only NGK BCPR6ES(-II) or BCPR7ES(-II) plugs can be used in these cars and must be gapped to spec.
MBC allows faster boost response and will override boost limiter in 1st and 2nd gears. MBC does NOT have the APC capabilities of adjusting boost in response to bad gas and temperature.
An MBC alone will not allow you to increase ultimate boost limits much beyond stock settings. Too high and the ECU fuel map will hit cut off. To allow higher boost, you need a modified ECU with a fuel map supporting high boost or modified MAP sensor.
Ideally, stacking SMBC and modded ECU delivers the best performance.
