About the bulkhead and floorpan areas needing work - could always cut out an existing bulkhead and floor from a donor RWD car and splice it into the 900. Totally Frankenstein, but totally doable and fun.
What about this crazy idea: keeping an existing 16V Saab engine, and use the output shaft as the main drive by fabing up a single piece which lengthens the output shaft through the rear of the previous diff case (most likely a custom piece designed for load bearing), with an additional set of support bearings to help with load at the tail end of the case, plus a shaft oil seal, then with necessary u-joints continue on down to the rear diff. Stupid, I know.
