Going RWD, as others have said, meaning basically putting a transmission inside the passenger compartment. Consider that the factory 4-cylinder sits just inches from the firewall, and there isn't much room up front to shift things forward. The result is gonna be a big lump of metal in the middle of the car, in an already narrow footwell...
Personally, the only way I would consider doing this is with a WRX setup (hah, the irony!) with a substantially shallower engine. The WRX setup may potentially fit in the engine bay without encroaching too much on passenger space, and can be converted to pure RWD for not much money. The rear-end is still a concern, but I very much agree that the only way I'd pursue this is if the rear suspension could be improved... a live axle out back doesn't seem like a step in the right direction...
