Along those lines but more generally, I'd love to be able to have a manual interface to the P/I buses. The idea of the bus architecture enables all modules to have all inputs available and be able to send commands to any other. It may be dreaming, but from reading the T7 literature, it sounds theoretically possible to sit "your own extra" ECU in the bus somewhere to send commands to the fans (or other bits) based on the bus inputs. You'd have to know lots about the architecture and protocol.
It's alot like sending a command with a Tech2, which acts as 'another' box in the network while connected. VWs have this multiple bus thing, and people have spliced in (CAN protocol) to the lower-speed newtorks to do things like read dashborad values, roll up windows, etc. (Tourages even have wireless-b on top of that, for 'drive-thru' diagnosis, although software conflicts can cause a row of them to all develop the same CEL...)
Given the SID plug in my 9-5 says VW/Audi on it, I'd wager the slower Saab 'I-bus' speaks CAN.
But I ramble. I'm still fighting with the oil pressure gauge install :\
