I bought a master-link chain from eeuroparts.com. I couldnt find a source for the Saab tool, so I bought a chain breaker/riveter tool from cyclegear, a motorcycle supplier. It was about $100.
'Breaking' the chain is actually fairly direct. The tool has a pin that a screw drives into one of the chain links until it comes out of the chain. Nothing is actually broken, just seperated.
I took a finishing nail to join the old chain to the new one. I cut it, leaving just enough of the nail to bend up so that it wouldn't fall out.
Then i turned the flywheel by hand, while my friend kept tension on the chain so it wouldnt come off the crankshaft pulley.
When the chain end came up, I took out the nail and used the chain tool to press a copper plate over the 2 link pins to join the ends of the chain together.
Then I used the tool to drive a small ball-headed bolt onto the heads of the links until they mushroomed out a bit. It all seemed very secure when I was done.
Everything in the guides looked very clean. The chain and sprockets looked like new. I would never have thought to replace them if the tensioner gap hadnt been 13mm. After replacing the chain, it is now 9mm.
