because I'm old-fashioned enough to believe they are better on 16" rims! Also, 16" tyres are cheaper and there's less risk of ruining the tyres or wheels on a kerb.
But I grant you there are some lovely-looking 17" wheels out there, and I wouldn't want to spoil anyone's fun. I'm pretty sure you would be OK with 225/45-17 but would expect more risk of rubbing the more you lower the car. Intuitively I feel you should choose a wheel that doesn't need spacers but as you already own some that's just by the by.
By the way, if you do lower the car, have the alignment done again!
On a 16" wheel - well, Saab ones are mostly 6½" rims and work best with the standard 205/55. 225/50 gives almost exactly the same rolling radius but I think you would need at least a 7" rim to keep the tyre stable.
18" - don't even think about it for the roads you use!
Finally, tyres will vary considerably as far as sidewall stiffness goes. For instance, I fitted Goodyear F1 GS-D3s to my stiffened/lowered car and they actually helped the ride, with a modest pressure increase (say 36½ psi). I transferred the wheels and tires to my "new" Anniversary, to which I then fitted Aero/saab Sports suspension: now I'll be looking for tyres with stiffer walls next time, because steering response is slightly below par. But you might find the Goodyears helpful on the Maine roads.
Hope some of these ramblings help - Bill
