I'm not an analog design engineer but everything you've wrote seems true to me. That said, I don't see why it's not good enough to look at a 0-5V ouput from a MAF. Or to calculate the rpm from the crank angle sensor. Or look at spark trigger events. Those types of things are what I'm needing to do right now. Data logging capabilities are also important. Why pay for a Rolls Royce when a Saab probably gets me around just fine? How much loading is too much for a robust automotive-type control? And there's no sense in being able to read your sensors at a faster rate than your bus speed, right?
Not that your points aren't valid, but if you can point me towards a source for buying a "real" used scope and data logging package for around $140.00 I'm very very interested...
