Tushy,
Hope all's well!
Ignition timing can be a substantial factor in turbocharger response (spool), maximum boost pressure targets, consistancy of boost pressures, and off boost engine performance.
A typical ignition timing parameter for OEM engine applications over 18 psi charge pressures would be to have a base timing of 18-19 dbtdc while allowing for a maximum retard to 10-10.5 dbtdc when under full charge pressure. This could be checked with your timing light and mityvac hand pump or regulated pressure. As pressure is put to the ignition diaphragm, timing should retard to a maximum of 10-10.5 dbtdc. The stop on the OEM ignition diaphragm could be DIY modified (bend or trim the stop of the ignition diaphragm) to allow for a further advance of base timing (to 18-20 dbtdc at atmos. pressure). The ignition curve can also be further modified through use of a manual boost controller at the diaphragm signal line.
Best Regards,
GSK at SWEDISH DYNAMICS,INC.
