These are extremely good header articles, and if you go back to read some of the other ones in the series 'Revenge of the Nerds' the articles on turbos, reading compressor maps etc. are very well written, but most of them are very math intensive.
Dean, I must respectfully dissagree with you though, a buddy of mine with a '69 Camaro with long tube headers has a ceramic heat coating on his headers, and after being run to full temp, you can touch the headers after only a minute or two, and hold onto them after five or so, the coating keeps the area around the headers and the whole engine bay much cooler than stock. I'm going to wrap my headers, as I dont want my car down for a week getting them Jet Hot coated, to protecting the upper a-arm bushing and motor mount from the heat, I dont think that I will be able to tell any performance gain though.
I will say that my equal length headers really smoothed out the power band and inproved throttle response above 4000rpm, there was almost no wheezing above 5000rpm on my stock '85 SPG when they were on there, with the stock downpipe! They were a huge improvement, but Dean, you are definitely right about the increased surface area radiating heat much more rapidly into the engine bay. There is easily twice the surface area of the stock manifold, and the material is so much thinner that it is sped up even more rapidly.
I think that this exhaust manifold design is more what you are thinking along the lines of. I would be interested to know if there are dyno results of this design vs. the equal length design, if Jon has those.
