In order to obtain a signal there has to be some loading of the OEM circuit for which it is not designed. Whether any additional loading is within acceptable tolerance is really the question. I'm not saying it is okay or that it isn't, but that it's possible it's not. I am saying that it doesn't matter either which way though--because the data is practically useless.
In any case, knowing your air/fuel is the easiest way to avoid any number of very expensive problems. "Knowing" is the key word there. A stock narrow-band is, for most practical purposes, a switch that tells you if you're leaner than 14.7:1 or richer. Nevermind that the neat gage on your dash will flash all sorts of cool lights at you and impress the poser in the Civic next to you, truth is it can only tell you that you're above or below stoic combustion. So really you don't "know" anything by running a narrowband gage.
Maximum power is produced somewhere between the range of 12.2-12.6:1 and that has been demonstrated over and over. And if you're running WOT and your narrowband gage all of a sudden reads lean, there's a pretty good chance at that point you've probably already started to hear some expensive noises. Sure would have been nice to know you were getting progressvely leaner as you you were passing 3000 rpm accelerating up that steep hill instead of when it was too late at redline....
Narrowband gages are used for closed loop calibration.
