"According to my Saab V4 manual, 1971 and on cars built for the USA use 3 degrees before top dead center, not 6."
Brian, I had not known that as my car is a '69, but you are right. Haynes Manual V4 66-75 shows 6BTDC vacuum disconnected, but North American models with exhaust emission control system and dual-vacuum distributor, 3BTDC with both vacuum lines disconnected, and reading between the lines it appears that started in 1971. Autobooks manual #764, V4 66-75, is slightly less specific but also gives USA 1971, apparently meaning 1971-up, as 3BTDC.
"Kansas: in all your experience and expertise is that not correct?"
In this instance its more like my 60-foot bookshelf of printed information, plus a ton of computerized stuff including an on-line information system. Thanks for asking, it gives me a good opening to explain a bit. Reflecting on this thread, I said I wouldn't tell the opening poster how to set timing . If I came across as snooty or superior there that was not my intent & I apologize. The intent was more like to express several interconnected things: 1) I am a lot more inclined to help someone who has exhausted available resources, like, find a book and see what it says, and then ask a specific question about what is not understood; and 2) The question is barely answerable by myself, as asked, in any amount of time that I have to spend; and 3) If I did try to answer in less that 2-3 hours of typing I would inevitably leave stuff out that could easily lead the instructee astray; and 4) On a point ignition system you have to set the point dwell before setting timing, nobody has mentioned that, a whole nother matter that I regard as harder to do right than setting timing; and 5) Not enough information was given originally for me to have confidence that setting the timing would solve the poster's problem anyway.
In short I am happy to help but felt that the request was a little too broad for me to usefully respond, sort of like, "My engine doesn't work good, how do I rebuild it?" Not answerable in this format. Thanks for listening, K
