Another couple of things that will make timing the engine easier are:
1. With the engine off, clean the timing marks on the front engine cover and also the little "V" mark on the pulley and take a small amount of white or light-colored paint and paint the very bottom of the "V" mark on the pulley and the appropriate timing mark on the front engine cover. This way, with a spinning fan, belt and alternator between your timing light and the marks it gives you the best view to safely and accurately time the engine. Basically then all you have to be able to do is align the two white marks by moving the distributor. The marks on the front engine cover are close together and hard to tell apart with all the parts moving. It is also easier to do this in a darkened area so your timing light and your eyes do not have to compete with bright sunlight around you.
