All of the Sonett IIIs had the three outside vent openings behind the small rear windows. All also had the black aluminum screen inside the car above and behind the windows. I purchased a 1974 in 1978 and it had both. I currently have a 1973 and it has both. I also have 1972, 1971 and 1970, all with both. These were designed to promote airflow through the cabin, particularly during the winter when the windows are closed. Not specifically to prevent CO2 poisoning. These vents do a passable job of venting moisture from your breath. If your car does not have the inside or the outside openings, it means a previous owner modified them. Most likely, a missing inside screen is the result of replacing the upholstry above the door without proper attention to detail. The post containing the outside vents is prone to stress cracks at the top and bottom. If the vent openings are missing, perhaps a prior owner repaired the fiberglass and simply glassed over the openings to strengthen that area.
