Thanks to all who responded.
thought I would give the post mortum.
tried all keys event the emergency 'new spare' we keep
Shop pulled it today key would not turn for either the owner, long time
SAAB, Volvo, Mercedes mechanic.  He and his 'assistant' another mechanic
who works for him, tried for (their term) ' A long time' to operate the
ignition to no avail. In the end they removed the steering column and cut
the cylinder off.  So now I need the whole she--bang, about 295.00 plus
labor

As the compressor seized they are doing the A/C now too.  Interestingly
SAAB said the cylinder was 3-4 weeks (minimum) out so am going with a
'special order' cylinder not from SAAB. Also he had a 91 9000T towed in 3
weeks ago with same problem. Fortunately for that owner he managed to get
the cylinder out by turning the key patiently, and found the cylinder was
'dropping its parts into its innards' he suspected owner abuse.

Oh-well its only money, about $1500.00 for both jobs.
