I recently experienced a whirring or 
grinding noise that was sometimes constant 
and sometimes intermittent from my 99 9-3 
SE. It turned out to be a broken gear in 
the headlight washer mechanism which was 
preventing the motor from determining that 
the wiper was in the 'stowed' position.

Perhaps your noise is originating from the 
same source?
