Aging '94 900 Turbo Convertible : sell or restore?
Posted by barton (more from barton) on Tue, 19 Sep 2000 12:38:57
I just got the dreaded 'call from the mechanic'...I knew it was going to be expensive since the car was going in for a 120K service, but....
The car:
1994 900 Turbo Convertible, Black w/ Tan Top, 5 Spd.
The list of things to fix:
New/Rebuilt 5 spd tranny (reverse is gone) 'New'/rebuilt Turbo (waste gate ready to go) Head gasket New convertible top (wearing out in left/right rear) Power steering pump leak, rack may be bad Exhaust Heat Shield Rear brakes/rotors SRS Crash Sensors cleaned/serviced (SRS Light on) Front tranny mount Sway arm bushings
Body re-painted (no rust, 1 minor dent, no accidents) : $2000?
The questions:
Are the estimates correct? (I know I can get cheaper tranny/turbo, but they won't be rebuilt or come w/ warranty of any kind).
Is it worth it?
If I were it sell it today, what would it be worth?
A mint condition, low mileage version of this car appears to be going for about $9k. What would the car be worth after all the work is done but w/ 120K miles on it?
I realize these are highly subjective questions -- of course, it all depends on how much one likes the car, wants to keep it, etc. However, I have been rear-end'ed twice in Saabs (86, 91) that I had put substantial money into at similar mileages, both cars totaled, both times I had more into the cars than it was worth to the insurance company/BlueBook, and I got stuck with a loss both times.
What would you do?
thx in advance for any input, insight, encouragement, discouragement or otherwise...
