Dave, I've owned both, the 9000 CSE (105,000 mi) and the 9-5 SE V-6 (35,000 mi). They are quite different cars! The hatch in the 9000 is a plus, the ride is not as good as the 9-5, and the engine shakes on idle (automatic transmission, not such a problem on the manual). The 9000 seats are better (subjective), but the controls and radio are much better in the 9-5. Overall, I think the 9-5 is the better car by dint of its more modern design, safety features, ride, handling and refinement. If you are choosing the automatic, the transmission in the 9-5 is superior.
If I had a choice, I'd opt for the 9-5, however, if you are considering the 4-cyl. model, up to MY 2001, the engine (except Aero) has 170 HP whereas the 9000 CSE had 200. Certain 9000 models had only 170, they are the LPT equipped cars, so you have to be careful when selecting (also, avoid any early non turbo model). The 9000 Aero (manual version) has great performance but is somewhat harsh riding - a plus for some, minus for others! The 9-5 Aero is also a fine performer and more refined than the 9000.
>From a reliability standpoint, both my cars were/are good, but I think the 9-5 has an advantage.
Hope you find this information useful.
