Subject: 9-5 4-cylinder PCV question ================= We have a 1999 9-5 with the four cylinder base engine with 82,000km on the clock. I have noticed that when I check the oil level with the engine hot I can see vapours coming out of the filler tube. Recently, I removed the cam cover to stop an oil weep. There is a plastic tube that enters the cam cover at the rear left side (as you look at it). I presume this is the pcv tube. Just for the hell of it, I sucked and blew into the tube. Normally, pcv systems are one way, in my experience at least. This one, however, sucked and blew with no difficulty and I could hear liquid bubbling when I did this, rather like a hookah pipe. The return pipe to the inlet tract at the front of the engine, which I had to undo when I removed the cam cover, was dry and almost rusty, implying no oily fumes are being returned to the engine. I am presuming here that this is, in fact, part of the pcv system. I can't imagine what else it is. Yesterday, after a 1,600 km round trip over Christmas and at the end of a five hour cruise down the highway, I checked the oil. The dipstick kept coming up with yellow-brown scum on it. Condensation on the filler tube??? Does this sound as if the pcv system is working as it should? Is there a schematic for the system somewhere on the web?? Any suggestions??
