I have noticed the messages about 16V timing chains. I am on Saabs number 4, 5, and 6; all
but the first with the 16V engine. While the odds of a chain failure before 100K or 120K miles
is low if there are no obvious symptoms, they

do happen enough to be a problem. As I wrote last June, compared to the cost of undoing the
damage from a broken chain, early replacement is cheap insurance. Here is my posting from June.

I have had it done on at least 2 of my 9000s, and if I remember correctly,
Petersen Automotive in Skokie, IL charged me around $300.

I had both cars done when they went past 80K miles. I know that I probably
could have gone longer, and monitored the old chain carefully, but I consider
a new chain to be cheap insurance.
