Yes, there is a _MAJOR_ difference between a belt and a chain: I owned an '87 Renault GTA since new - replaced the belt every 30k, timing belt failure is the #1 cause of GTA motor death. I just sold the Renault(w/103k) + an '82 MB 300D turbo to get a 9kT. The Benz had nearly 200k when I changed the original chain. My '87 9kT still has the original chain no39sdcx6spamx782 199.5k. ('Course, rebuilding a Benz diesel _starts_ at $5k...makes the 6 hour job to change a chain look CHEAP!)
There's a _little_ noise, but only at idle. The local Saab garage said the noise was probably a combination of chain & lifters. Anything above idle and the noise disappears. He told me he's heard chains much noisier than mine.
I (respectfully) disagree that 'most timing chains will last the life of the car'. If we were driving cheapo' cars that crapped out after 100k or 200k tops, it wouldn't matter. IMHO, get a second opinion but chains are cheap insurance compared to whackin' the motor. There ARE people on the Mercedes list who claim to have 350-400k+ on the original chain BUT they frequently check wear + they do oil/filter changes more religiously than you can imagine.
My 2 Euros, Joe '87 9000 Turbo, 199.5k <-getting a new chain in the Spring 'ready or not'!
