iIn addition to owning a Saab 9000 I also own another front wheel drive/transverse mounted vehicle: the original, a Mini. I had the same sound in my Mini when the engine mounts went....the torque on the engine/transmission would slide the whole setup ever so slightly until it 'clunked and stopped'....
If the C.V. was gone I think the clunk is present when you change torque rapidly ie any shift in gears after a build up in revs...
