1991 9000 Turbo 16V problem
Posted by Justin Apperley (more from Justin Apperley) on Thu, 11 Nov 1999 23:14:21
To whoever can help or advise,
Wondering if you had any thoughts on this problem
I recently purchaced a 1991 9000 Turbo 16V
The car is based in Melbourne Australia.
It has a full service history every 10,000km and has just done 170,000km
All aspects of the engine and driving seem to be fine. It has good strong
acceleration and is very smooth and quiet; except that when it idles ( about
900 prm) the whole car vibrates very badly
I put it in for a service firstly at a Saab/Volvo garage that had been
dealing with Saabs for about 20 years. They gave it a basic service, cheked
the tune but couldn't find anything wrong. They suggested taking it to a
Saab dealership to hook it up the the computer.
I took it the Mentone Moter group in Melbourne who has well known and
respected Saab sales and service. The mechanic who booked the car in agreed
that there was something wrong.
They had the car for a whole day and spent most of it working on finding the
cause of this vibration.
They replaced all suspicious looking air hoses. Cleaned the injectors,
replaced plugs etc.
They could not find the cause of the problem. They also noted that the new
engine mounts were non genuine but that would not cause that level of
vibration. They said the chain tensioner was failing, you can hear it
rattling a bit sometimes at idle, but again not the cause of vibration
They didn't plug it in the computer because they said that if any component
was faulty or if a setting was out, the check engine light would come on.
I don't know what to do now.
The car vibrates very badly at idle and sometimes misses. The rpm fluctuates
at idle from 800-1000rpm. Saab said the CO2 reading also go up and down.
No one can seem to help me. Have you heard of this occuring before or do you
have any suggestions that I can check out. I'm fairly mechanically minded.
I appreciate your time, if you need any other information let me know.
Thanks
Regards
Justin Apperley
