Have you gotten a second estimate from another shop?  From your email
address I make out that you are in England, so don't know what prices are
like over there, but at todays exchange rate you are talking more than
$6000!!!  For that price you can have a top of the line MB transmission
repaired around here or even buy a complete running '88 9000 with no major
mechanical problems!  Never had a Saab auto tranny repaired but my wife's
BMW auto tranny was a little over $2000 for a complete rebuild and BMW parts
are more expensive than Saab parts.  Looks to me like your 'automatic
transmission specialist' is taking you for a ride!  If I was you I would
most certainly not fund his next vacation to Marbella!  Also used Saab
tranmissions around here of that vintage are less than $1000.  Have you
called some yards to see what the real price of a used tranny is?  Best of
luck and don't give up so easily.
