9-3 Headlight dimmer problems

I've had intermittent problems with my high- and low-beam headlights. My current problem:
When the main headlight control knob is off, both left and right low-beams work properly (daytime running lights). When I pull the left control stem to flash the hi-beams, only the passenger side hi-beam comes on. (Both low-beam lamps stay on as they should.
Problem: When the main headlight control is fully on, when I pull the left control stem to toggle the hi-beams on, the right hi-beam comes on and the left headlight turns off completely - no hi-beam or low-beam!
Any ideas?
