I've posted on these boards a few times about my 88 9000T. I've loved driving the car, but it's at the stage where everything is falling apart. I spent $$ on a fuel pump only to see the brake line fail a few weeks later. Last straw.
In looking at my replacement options, I'm thinking seriously of going for a brand new vehicle (or very low milage late model). The appeal is the warranty. I read something recently that said if you're going to put your money into a depreciating asset, you need the warranty. Otherwise you're spending money maintaining a depreciating asset. Made a lot of sense.
That being said, here are my questions:
1. 9-3 vs. Volvo S40. From what I've read the 9-3 is roomier and more fun to drive. The S40 seems like you're getting a decent car for the money, though. Any thoughts.
2. Other random choices. Please don't laugh, but what you get for the money with the Altima 3.5 is tempting. Also, is the Subura Legacy hoopla for real? The AWD sedan looks like a nice car for around or less than the others i'm looking at.
3. Dealers. I live in Manhattan. Any dealers I should specifically target from an ease of sale and bargaining perspective? I've heard mixed reviews on Zumbach.
4. Pricing. I plan to pay cash. Can I expect a discount based on that? Does it make dealers more willing to give on other items? What kinds of incentives are out there right now. The SAAB website is currently showing a program where they give you $2000 off the MSRP of the linear, plus another $2000 cash if you fly to Sweden to pick it up. Factoring additional travel costs, that's about 3000 to 2500 off MSRP plus you get a trip. Can I use this for leverage.
Finally, I'm considering doing a lease that I would just pay off up-front (I want to buy property this year and don't want to be carrying the debt). I know NYS has a weird lease program required by law. Any thoughts on going this route.
Thanks for digging in to my questions.
