It is all semantics as far as 'good'. As you note there is a pattern of love and hate for SAABs. When comparing them to other cars they are good, but are also known to have areas of issues as many other cars do.
I have a 2001 9-3 and really like the car. From people who have owned Volvos this probably is a very comparible vehicle. I have looked at Volvos, but never owned one. Many Volvo owners experience the same some love'um or hate'um syndrome.
These cars (Volvo or SAAB) are not a Lexus or Toyota or Honda. I often feel that when you hear complaints about a car the owners has experienced previous ownership with a brand having fewer problems and hang the lemon tag no the new car.
So it is all the true theory of relativity: 'everything is relative to your prior experience.'
I might suggest a certified used car. You save the initial depreciation; the car is new enough that people really do not know the difference; and the bumper to bumper warranty, mileage-wise, can be longer than the original coverage period.
