I understand the newer 9-3 uses the GM corporate aluminum block. Are the cylinders sleeved with a steel liner or are they merely some type of "treated" aluminum (unsleeved)? The reason I ask is that a friend of mine tore down a Saturd engine that had been burning oil at the rate of a quart every 200 miles (at a mere 71k), he suspected bad rings but was horrified when he found out the ring wear was not the culprit, it was the wear in the cylinder, there is no sleeve, it was an aluminum bore! Remember the notorious Chevy Vega blocks????
While his wife was shopping for a new Saturd (we advised another vehicle), the salesman told here they use the same engine as the new Saab. I doubt that is true, at least the head is different, hope the block is too.
