a) re-enable the upshift light and follow it.
b) coast in neutral to the stop lights.
c) never, ever "downshift your way to a stop".
d) moderate acceleration. hard acceleration keeps the "upshift light" extinguished.
e) Keep the tires pumped up. Especially given that you are in city traffic, most of your drag is rolling friction, not Aerodynamic.
f) Anticipate the traffic. Every BTU of heat dissipated by your brakes came from burning 3 to 10 btus worth of gasoline. I know, in heavy traffic you're pretty much at the mercy of the herd, but it's better to let a few people cut in front of you than to burn the extra fuel to keep the gap in front of you closed.
g) Low viscosity oil to save fuel is false economy. 0W30 or 5W30 ILSAC GF-4 rated oil may improve your mpg's by one, but they will not protect your engine, especially in a hot climate, as well as a 5W40 or 15W50 product. You want high mpc as well as mpg.
h) lose some weight...just kidding...
