I want to know the same thing.
In older SAAB's and older other cars, I would say it would work because the size is almost the same. However, with all these computerized gizmos like ESP and SAAB's warning in the owner's manual not to use tires of sizes other than the listed even though they may fit, I am wary of being adventurous.
I also want a 225 width so I'm thinking of getting a 17 inch wheel. I've heard that 235/45-17 is ok for the 2006 9-3 and, doing the math, that size rotates the same turns per mile as the stock 215/55-16. So a 235 is an option.
I'm considering Michelin Pilot Sport Cups which have a treadwear rating of only 80, which may only last 8,000 mi. for me. The main concern that I have is whether or not those tires are a deathtrap if it rains. Of course, during the winter, I will take them off.
