It's usually wear *and* tear. The first replacement under warranty was kind of a good will as tears in door gaskets *generally* don't happen by themselves. You wouldn't get a tear in a seat fixed under warranty, the assumption would be that something tore it. If it was because of a door alignment issue, there would be a worn spot first and then a small hole and then a tear, but not just a tear.
I think the dealers body shop manager was giving you better info and good info, than your brother. I think you brother was feeding into your concern.
In my experience I haven't had any Saab with a door gasket problem and it usually doesn't happen by itself, something tears it.
