We rarely had ice problem. Naperville (west of Chicago) had ice problem in an evening several weeks ago but my area was ok.
I live in the NW Chicago suburbs. I used Michelin Alphin (snow tires) for my old 9-3. My 9-5 Aero has 17" ContiExtreme tires (225/45 all season).
Of course the snow tires are better but the all season tires are not bad (I used it for 2 winters). I usually put more air into the low profile tires.
