bizarre: license plate lamps stay on

OK, while I'm waiting for my local dealer to get my car in for service, I'll toss this question out to the group:
I have a 2003 9-3ss linear+launch package, manual, with no significant history. Last night, I was in my garage and happened to notice that the license plate lights were on.
No other lamps were illuminated. Nothing else amiss. No SID messages.
So, I started her up, and methodically turned on/off the fogs, changed the light knob positions, halo lighting on/off via key fob, and even cycled interior lights on/off.
The license plate lights remained on, no matter what.
I finally pulled fuse #26, which not only took care of the license plate lights (no drained battery) but as expected I lost the left rear turn/fog lamps, and the trunk release. (Helpful hint: be prepared to crawl through the back seat to grab the emergency inside release to open the trunk with this fuse out.)
So, what's up? I know the system software has been known to do a few odd things, but I haven't seen this particular item mentioned.
Anyone have a good idea, while I wait on my dealer's appointment?
