The bottom line would be whatever the tire manufacture recommends and this can vary a little between tires. Glancing at some of my old fitment guides this looks to be beyond the norm. For a 235/45 17 I am seeing 7.5 - 9.0 as the recommended rim width. Regardless going to the widest acceptable end of the width range isn't alway the best choice for a given rim since a rim at the narrow end of the range can distort the contact patch producing non-optimal result. Then of course there is the question of whether the supension configuration will work with the wider setup as effectively (even if the rim is optimal) but that is another topic.
