Thanks for asking the question. Looks like you got your answer.
I've been playing around with it a bit (06 93 Aero SC) and I find it to be an improvement over a typical auto. I have used it to downshift as an engine brake on slick or icy roads.
The one thing that makes it tricky is the difficulty of knowing what gear you are in. The 06 Aero is a 6-speed and the only way to know the gear is to look at the instrument cluster. Not the place I like to look when I'm using it. With a manual you know where that knob is positioned. The manual with clutch also allows more control and is certainly more responsive.
One place I've used it is when in D at about 50 or 55 mph in traffic. The Aero has a tendancy to downshift 5-6 easily at this speed. It seems this would use a lot of gas and it's noisy with the twin pipes. I put it in M6 and live with the sluggish acceleration. Same for 3-4 and 4-5.
Any one have experience with this being more or less easily worn out when chaning from Auto vs. Sentronic?
