Just thought I would pulse the group about the sound of a cold 2.0T engine running within the 1st minute or so of driving.

I know sounds are hard to describe in words but (here goes anyway). Mine exhibits a fairly pronounced even, consistent, muffled growling, tight rotating parts wearing out sort of sound that fades after the first minute of driving. Its farily similar to the normal engine sound but is a bit louder and pronounced enough (just a tad different in characteristics) to raise some questions. It appears that additional drag may be on the engine during this short period since the tach appears to drop faster back to idle when accelerator is pulsed than when the engine is warm (something rubbing maybe?) but perhaps that is just how a cold engine works.

Dlr didn't hear anything unusual but as we know some dlr's don't have very good hearing ;) (sound was noticed immediately by a passenger w/o any mention of it so I'm not hallucinating). I've never heard a similar sound on any other engine but my 900T made so many strange haunting noises over the last 60k that I owned it that I was comfortable ignoring/tuning out most of them since they were "normal". I'm ok with "sounds" but I just like to know what is producing it so it can either be comfortably ignored or fixed before creating a larger issue.

Is there some unique design feature on this engine that could contribute to such a noise? Could this be the chain rubbing on tensioners or perhaps a belt or pulley rubbing on something that gains clearance as the engine warms up? Could this a part of the engine that is waiting for oil to circulate in order to quiet things down? Anyone notice a similar type of start up sound (i.e., does the cold start engine normally sound constant in tone but a bit rough and growley?...like when you approach a dog that doesn't want you around....that low constant tone with rough/growley texture). My only concern is that the noise I'm hearing is actually a part wearing out slowly for 1 minute during each start-up.

Other than this brief sound, engine appears to start and run fine, gets stated mileage, no unusual leaks or smells.

Thanks
Pat
