Ron, I agree that Saab needs to make $$$ to stay in business, and if that means they have to prostitute themselves to AWD, then so be it. But hopefully they will still offer a FWD model for guys like me. It's sort of like Porsche making and SUV (I'm also a Porsche owner). Most Porsche purists hate it (like me), but realize it was a "necessary evil" to keep Porsche from going out of business during the last 10 years.
We all know the auto magazines and media will like Saab better as AWD, whether they need it or not. Heck, look at Volvo!!! They were nothing until they built the 850 AWD, then they basically became a mainstream automaker, at least in the eyes of most folks.
Also, I think it's all about what's on paper for performance, not what the car does on the road. Big numbers on paper get buyers into the showroom, even if the car performs like crap as an AWD. But Saab always has had a high rate of purchase from folks who actually test drive the car, b/c they perform much better than they look like on paper, but that only gets you so far!
Example...I drove a Volvo S60R. It has 300HP and Haldex AWD. It felt like it had about 180-200HP at best on the road b/c so much of this "big number" HP on paper was lost in the driveline and the sheer weight of the car. Sure it had little torquesteer, but it did not feel like 300HP....but I was another sucker....attracted to the dealership b/c of the "on paper" 300HP on this car.
Nick.
