It's not the same as the old one.
It was a joint venture with SAAB engineers very involved. It was built to be smooth, efficient, and handle forced induction. It's called the ecotec and variants of it are used in different cars from GM. There is at least one extremely modifid version of it getting 1000hp at the drag strip.
Personally, I like the 2.3 in the Aero the best but the 2.0T I have is smoother albeit less gutsy than the 2.3 in my opinion.
I am sure that others can chime in with more detailed information and maybe even correct me.
