My vote goes to some sort of solvent or other unusual deteriorating environmental condition is degrading the rubber faster than normal. My key is about 16 months in service and its pretty much as good as new. Ozone is also hard on rubber (though ozone usually makes it hard and crack) but some substances will quickly turn rubber to goo and once exposed its hard to stop (the "gummy" quality you mention is the tip off).
If you have ever taken the car in for service, my guess is your mechanic had some nasty stuff on his hands and then used the key.
I'm not a big fan of the rubber keys though....I never had any problems with the old fashioned metal type and they sure are cheaper to replace. Last time I went on a road trip I felt like I had to take BOTH keys just in case one failed (great....now that increases the chance that both could be lost or stolen...good thinking SAAB).
