Generally the first model year of any car tends to have some problems + bugs that get worked out in future years... The transmission failures in the 2003's are afaik completely gone after 2004.
We've also been considering 9-3's. Our mechanic has a few beefs (eg turbo location), but all in all, the 2005+ models sound pretty easy to own + buy used (no sludge issues like on the pre-2004 9-5's).
